HISTORY OF OLYMPOS
Olympos is one of earliest ancient cities that adopted the Christianity. The priest Methodist has visited the city in 300AC. Since Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha ( famous navy commander ) conquered the Mediterranean , the Olympos city was left deserted and had become a ghost town. The ruins in Olympos are dated back into Roman times. Most of these are covered with greenery. There has not been a considerable excavations made apart from light cleaning job done by the local government.
There are 2 important ancient ruins at the mouth of the Akdere River – walls for the prevention of the floods and two tombs.
This area is rich with the history and worth visiting. There is an ancient church and ancient Roman bath. Opposite the mosaic made hammam, there is another ruin of a temple dedicated to the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. After passing by the ruins of the temple – Necropolis can be seen on the skirts of the mountain.
The stone graves next to each other are very impressive. There are about 250 of these graves.
To the east of Necropolis, the Olympos amphitheatre can be reached on foot. 1500 seating capacity however the situations of the seats are not very good.
